Taipei 101

Location: Taipei City, TaiwanArchitect: C.Y. Lee & Partners Architects & Planners

Site Characteristics Typical Sungshan Formation in the Taipei Basin / Deep, soft sedimentary strata. Bedrock (Kueichulin Formation) is located approximately 40 to 65 meters deep. Situated near the Taipei Fault.

Project Scale Superstructure: Tower levels 101 Floors to 5 Floors podium Basement: 5 floors, excavation depth GL.-21.8 to -23.6 m.

Geotechnical Features Foundation design adopted performance-based concepts, with pile capacity verified through full-scale static load tests. Pile foundation system: Tower : Large-diameter bored piles (RCD), configured in a pile group(D: 1.5 m, Quantity: 380 piles, Spacing: 3.96 m) Podium : Single-column single-pile system using bored piles(D: 2.0 m, Quantity: 166 piles, Spacing: 9 m) Pile lengths: 60–81 m, with up to 30 m socketed into bedrock Basement construction methods: Tower: Top-down construction (double top-down sequence) Podium: Bottom-up / conventional top-down (depending on area) Innovative Technique Developed: A pile toe cleaning and post-grouting method was developed for this project to remove sediment at the pile base and enhance end-bearing capacity. The technique proved effective and was later widely adopted in the industry.
